In the Pakistan's largest city Karachi's a first batch of fifty dedicated CNG buses has been entered into a pilot project, to gain practical experience with this type of vehicle. The project was inaugurated by Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan.
The City District Government of Karachi (CDGK) has launched 50 environment-friendly CNG buses in an attempt to fight air pollution by traffic.
Of the total vehicle fleet, 25 were supplied by the Japanese manufacturer Hino and 25 by Daewoo from South Korea, Financed by the city's government at a cost of Rs218 million (USD 2.64 million), the buses each have a capacity for 80 passengers, 44 seated and the remaining standing.
Dr Khan said these are the first dedicated CNG buses introduced in Karachi. Another 100 buses are earmarked for purchase from the next budget, he added. The city government has also installed appointed five CNG stations for these buses. Ultimate goal is to replace the current bus fleet of the city by 11,500 modern buses.
