Manufacturers in Oak Park, Lake Orion and Holland will contribute to $5.6 million worth of new hybrid buses being purchased for Michigan transit agencies.
The Michigan Department of Transportation will have 50 fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly hybrid buses available for purchase by local transit agencies that will be 23 feet long and carry 12 to 14 passengers. Each bus will cost about $106,000.
Under 20 m.p.h., the buses will run off electricity. Driving more than 20 m.p.h. and the engine will run, recharging the batteries.
The bus hybrid system will be made by Azure Dynamics in Oak Park, the battery packs by Cobasys in Lake Orion and a future-use lithium battery will be made in a new Johnson Controls-Saft plant in Holland.
